Radiant Future : Our First University Education Grant Awarded to a Promising STEM Damsel!
In a historic moment for our organization ( The STEM Damsel Empowerment Network)and the STEM community, we proudly announce the awarding of our inaugural university education grant to a deserving young lady in Agbor, Delta State. This grant not only represents a significant step towards fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM fields but also underscores our commitment to empowering women and girls in pursuit of their academic and professional aspirations.
According to recent statistics, women remain significantly underrepresented in STEM fields globally, comprising only a fraction of the workforce in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In Africa and Nigeria specifically, the gender gap in STEM participation persists, with cultural biases and societal stereotypes often dampening the interest of girls in pursuing these fields.
Despite these challenges, initiatives like ours are working tirelessly to shatter biases and stereotypes and provide equal opportunities for all individuals interested in STEM. We believe that every child, regardless of gender, deserves a level playing field to explore their passions and talents.
As this milestone is celebrated, the Founder calls on the government to prioritize STEM education and ensure that the curriculum is inclusive and accessible to all students. By addressing systemic barriers and promoting diversity in STEM, we can unlock the full potential of our youth and drive innovation and progress in our society.
During the hybrid grant ceremony, esteemed guest speakers shared their inspiring messages of encouragement and support. Ms. Charity Anaja, the SA to the chairman, Senate Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation, emphasized the importance of perseverance and determination in the pursuit of STEM excellence. Mr. Richard Myhill, Director of the London Youth Science International Forum, highlighted the transformative power of STEM education in shaping future leaders.
Hajia Zainab Mohammed, President of Women WCCI, Dr. Stephanie Oniha, Executive Director of Eduaid Africa, Mr. Tope Osinowo, Deputy Hospital Director, Limes Elysium Healthcare UK, and Rev. Adesuwa Agboola, Proprietress of Seeds of Greatness Academy, all echoed the sentiment that STEM is the new normal and encouraged the awardee and other young girls to remain focused on their academic and career goals.
The ceremony included a heartfelt message from the representative of our funding partner organization; Dr. Nkemakolam Charles Onyenaucheya, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Joy Center for Women, Girls & Youth Development, who charged the girls to prioritize their education and see themselves as invaluable members of society with a valid responsibility to build a great future for themselves and the nation.
As we celebrate this milestone, let us reaffirm our commitment to nurturing the next generation of STEM leaders and creating a future where all individuals have equal opportunities to thrive and succeed.
